BEYOND THE HALL OF FAME: A WEEKEND IN COOPERSTOWN

Cooperstown is a perfect weekend, or longer, getaway for families. In addition to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, there is beautiful scenery, an outstanding museum, word class music, great accommodations and family friendly activities. 3 ½ to 4 ½ hours from NY.
The National Baseball Hall of Fame preserves and celebrates the History of baseball in the United States. It celebrates baseball’s greatest legends, see priceless memorabilia, learn about American history, and creates unforgettable family memories.
My visit to Cooperstown was especially meaningful because it brought back a lifetime of memories. I grew up Sunday afternoon at doubleheaders at Yankee Stadium, and I was fortunate enough to be at the Polo Grounds when the NY Mets came into existence in 1982. More than exhibits and memorabilia, it was like reconnecting to those treasured memories and honoring the players who inspired generations of fans, and experiences that have remained with me throughout my life.
Jewish baseball has been more than a game- it has been a way for Jews to be part of America society while maintaining pride in Jewish identity. The most influential figures include Hank Greenberg, Sandy Koufax, Al Rosen, Kevin Youkilis. Baseball is a common language that connects families, communities and Jewish tradition. Sports build friendships across generations. Greenberg and Koufax demonstrated that success never requires sacrificing one’s Jewish values.
Accommodations range from The Otesaga Resort Hotel to many historic and beautiful inns to include The Inn at Cooperstown Landmark Inn, The Cooper Inn and more….
Along Otesaga lake, called the Glimmerglass, (coined by author James Fenmore cooper in his 1814 novel The Deerslayer, reflecting the nine mile lake’s exceptionally placid , clear mirror like surface, which reflects the surrounding hills) there is boating, kayaking, fishing and scenic walks, along with golf, tennis and swimming. Restaurants offer all ranges of dinning, with many family friendly restaurants.
The Fennimore Art Museum is a living history museum dedicated to preserving and interpreting rural life in the 19th century. The museum contains folk art, American Indian, and art masterworks and changing exhibits.
Brewery OMMEGANG, founded in 1997 specializes in authentic Bagian style ails, with tours and expert led tasting.
The Glimmerglass Festival in July-August is an internationally renowned summer opera and musical theatre show place in an intimate 918 seat theatre. This. summer there is Oklahoma with its iconic songs that reflect, wholesome American values. Operas this summer include Madam Butterfly, Cosi, and Fellow Travelers.
The Farmer’s Market each Saturday is a small-town community market with growers, producers, produce and artists from over 50 surrounding communities.
Cooperstown offers experiences that that be shared among all generations. It is a place to make new memories, share stories, strengthen family bonds, making it a destination that families will remember long after the trip is over.
