Abe Kanfer

Abe Kanfer has been a member of Temple Israel of Great Neck for 22 years. He has been involved in the Temple Players theatre group for almost all of those years. Abe is a current member of the  Temple’s Board of Trustees, Co-Chair of the Programming Committee, member of the Israel Affairs Committee and Co President of the Men’s Club.

Abe grew up in Brooklyn where he attended the Yeshiva of Flatbush for both elementary and high school. He attended Yeshiva University and following that Queens College. He began his career as the Director of the Coop Department at Time Equities Inc., followed by a 26 year stint as the owner of  Pet Food and Supply stores in Queens and Long Island. In 2017 he returned to his true calling of real estate sales and has been with Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty in Great Neck since then.

Abe is married to Debra, a special education teacher in Queens. They have two children: their son Skyler aged 28  is currently an attorney At Simpson Thacher and daughter Barrett who is a recent graduate of Cornell University. Both children are proud graduates of Temple Israel Hebrew School and have been Bar/Bat Mitzvahed at the Temple.

Mitchell Bloom

Mitchell Bloom is a senior at Great Neck North High School. He resides in Great Neck with his parents, Michelle and Jonathan, and his two younger brothers, Jacob and Ari. As part of a multigenerational TIGN family, Mitchell has been actively involved in synagogue life since early childhood. He attended the TIGN Hebrew School and has spent the past four years as a teaching assistant, where he is known for his dedication, enthusiasm, and the genuine connection he builds with students and colleagues alike.

Mitchell’s strong ties to the Jewish community extend beyond the classroom. He has been a lifelong camper at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires and, last summer, traveled to Israel with the Camp Ramah Seminar program. The trip offered him a profound opportunity to experience Israel in the wake of October 7th, deepening his understanding and connection to the country.

In addition to his Jewish community involvement, Mitchell serves as a peer mentor for students with special needs, providing guidance and support. He also has a passion for sports, playing soccer with the Great Neck Soccer Club and the Great Neck North Varsity Soccer team.  He is and talented golfer, representing GN North on the Varsity Golf team.

Elizabeth Matalon

Elizabeth’s Jewish journey began in Park Slope, Brooklyn, where she attended Chai Tots Nursery School, followed by Hannah Senesh Jewish Day School. In second grade, she moved to Great Neck and became a member of Temple Israel, continuing her Jewish education through Temple Israel’s Hebrew School and the Waxman Youth House. For ten summers, Elizabeth attended B’nai B’rith Perlman Camp, an experience that profoundly shaped her Jewish identity. She became a Bat Mitzvah at Temple Israel in 2020 and has since worked alongside Rabbi Schweber, coaching Bar and Bat Mitzvah students in public speaking and confidence skills. Beyond her involvement in Jewish education, Elizabeth has starred in four TIGN Productions and will return to the stage this April for her final high school performance. She remains an active member of Temple Israel’s youth community and looks forward to continuing her Jewish journey on her college campus this fall.
